What is a QR Code?

‘QR code’ stands for ‘Quick Response code’. It is a pattern of black and white squares that when scanned by a smartphone or tablet it will directly open the relevant link without having to input the information or go via a website.

Myth – You do not need a QR Code Reader or a specific App. QR codes are read using the camera functionality.

What does a QR Code look like?

Here is an example of a QR code on the ITV APP.

In this example the user has opened the app on their TV but are required to register and sign in.

A QR code is being displayed on a TV, when the code is scanned by the device it opens the ITV ‘Sign In’ page and asks the user to enter the code on the screen on the device.  Once the code is entered the ITV device the App on the TV signs the person in.

Why do organisations use QR Codes?

QR codes are quick, convenient, and contactless. They allow users to quickly access websites, forms, documents, menus etc all via scanning the code with their smartphones.

From a user perspective, scanning a QR code vs entering website details significantly reduces the risk of user error. It provides direct access to the relevant page and avoids navigating a website.

Where do you find QR Codes?

QR codes are everywhere. You can find them in many places, such as:

  • Contactless Payments e.g. Car Parking

  • Accessing online services e.g. Banking, shopping

  • Marketing  Materials e.g.  event posters, product labels or flyers

  • Travel Tickets e.g. bus passes

  • Restaurant menus

How do you use a QR code?

Using a QR code is simple if your device (Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop) has access to a built in Camera. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open the camera or QR code scanning app: Point your device's camera directly at the QR code. Most smartphones already have a built-in QR code scanner in their camera app. If not, you can download a free QR code scanner from the app store.

  2. Wait for the link or information to appear: Your device will recognise the QR code and either display the information or automatically open a website, app or action embedded in the code.

  3. Interact with the content: Depending on the QR code's function, you can follow the link, view a menu, save contact information, make a payment, etc.

Are QR codes safe?

Beware of fraudulent QR code scams, fake QR codes can lead you to malicious websites.

Keep the following in mind :

  • Always check that a QR code sticker has not been placed over the original QR code.

  • Before clicking on the URL which appears after scanning – check for typos or strange links.

  • Don’t enter personal information – QR codes will never ask for your banking passwords

  • If you are not sure enter the URL directly onto your web browser.
